CDMX, Mexico.- After 15 voting attempts, Republican Kevin McCarthy has been elected as the new president of the US House of Representatives.
The Californian won with a margin of 216-21, in what have been the longest Senate elections in more than 160 years. A sample of the polarization within the body and the distrust of Kevin from a sector of his party.
About, the Reuters agency it specifies that the politician could be elected with the votes of less than half of the members of the House only because five of his own party withheld their votes. That is, while they did not endorse McCarthy as leader, they also did not vote for another contender.
The closeness of the vote and the altercations seen during the 14 previous failed attempts are an indication of the complex situation in which the 57-year-old Republican is in to hold office.
In fact McCarthy had to give in and make unprecedented concessions to a group of his party that doubted his leadership. This leaves him with far less power than his predecessor, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, had.
McCarthy agreed that any legislator, even one, can request his removal at any time. That will severely reduce his power to try to pass controversial laws. In addition he had to concede hefty spending cuts.
What has he said about Cuba?
kevin mccarthy exhibited in the past his disapproval of Obama’s policy towards Cuba.
Also following the demonstrations on July 11, 2021, the Californian politician announced that they would form a Cuba advisory team to advise House Republicans on the “ongoing freedom protests and government atrocities in Cuba.”
“The world has witnessed powerful images coming out of Cuba over the past five days,” McCarthy said in a statement. “With thousands of Cubans in more than 40 cities and small towns taking to the streets, the protests mark a historic moment in a society whose communist system has oppressed its citizens for more than 60 years.
“Its sudden eruption across Cuba is a dramatic and necessary repudiation of the Cuban communist regime,” McCarthy added.
McCarthy then explained that the “situation in Cuba” has reached its “turning point”, for which he stated that “[Estados Unidos] it must unequivocally support the brave fighters for the freedom of Cuba. They need our strong support, not weak rhetoric.”
