Mayor José Carlos Acevedo was brain dead

Hoy Paraguay

The mayor of Pedro Juan Caballero, José Carlos Acevedo, who was the victim of an attack this week, was left with a picture of brain death after several days fighting for his life.

The information was confirmed this afternoon by Dr. David Peña, head of intensive care at the Viva Vida Sanatorium, where the Pedro Juan mayor was hospitalized.

“The brain stopped working in 100% of its activities,” he mentioned at a press conference.

The doctor explained that they did everything in their power to prevent brain death from occurring, although this painful situation finally came about.

For his part, Dr. Esteban Encina, a neurologist, commented that after subjecting the mayor of Pedro Juan Caballero to a study during this afternoon they were able to have the final evaluation.

According to the professionals’ report, Acevedo has “irreversible brain damage” and there are no longer any alternatives available.

It should be remembered that José Carlos Acevedo had been fighting for his life after being shot by gunmen last Tuesday in the vicinity of the Pedro Juan Caballero Municipality.

At the moment, it has not yet been possible to identify those responsible for the act nor to know the details linked to the motive for the attack.
