Math and reading students in the US learned less in the pandemic

Students in most states and in almost every demographic group in USA experienced worrying setbacks in both math and reading skills from the impact of the pandemic, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as the “Nation Report Card”.

A quarter of fourth graders and nearly four in 10 eighth graders failed to grasp basic concepts, according to a survey of nearly 450,000 fourth and eighth graders in more than 10,000 schools between January and March this year.

A scant 26% of eighth graders in USA were competent in math, compared to 34% registered in 2019 before the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic. For fourth grade students, 36% were competent in mathematics, compared to 41% of the previous sample, before the health crisis and the remote model implementation.

In reading, 33% of fourth graders were proficient in the subject, while only 31% of eighth graders in United States was found to be above the basic level qualified.
