“Marianao es pa’ gusto”: Two Cubans “make fun” of official propaganda on TV

Marianao

MIAMI, United States. – A report from Canal Habanabroadcast this Friday from the municipality of Marianao, in the island’s capital, has generated a wave of memes and ridicule due to the comments of two interviewees who claim, with apparent irony, that there are no queues or power cuts in their municipality.

“Marianao is delicious, Marianao is to enjoy. There is everything, food, water, there is current, everything. They don’t turn off the electricity, we have water 24 hours a day,” say the two interviewees, who managed to sneak into the Havana Channel report despite the obvious exaggeration or irony of their words.

“They give us plenty of chicken, every day we have chicken, we don’t queue, paint, they are painting everything for us,” they also say.

The report by the journalist Elizabeth Cánova on the opinion of the inhabitants of Marianao regarding the “process of social transformation that is taking place in this locality” presents opinions, all positive, from other residents of the municipality.

Finally, it ends with the interviewees who have focused all the attention and who say to the other Cubans: “Come here, Marianao invites.”

The last week, the official media have published abundant propaganda about the supposed benefits of residing in Marianao, because this territory “won” the venue for the provincial act for the anniversary of July 26.

“There are many reasons to celebrate new victories this July 26 in Marianao, a municipality in the capital of Cuba where the transformations in the neighborhoods have demonstrated the potential of reserves that we have when the population participates, but above all in a territory with a strong roots in the defense of the Revolution and from which several of the young people who went to Moncada on the Centenary of José Martí departed”, public the Caribbean Channel on YouTube, on the same date as the Havana Channel report.

The reactions of Cubans on social networks were not long in coming. While many believe that it is a rampant lie and an exaggeration used by the regime for propaganda purposes, many others have considered it to be “trolling” or irony, especially since blackouts, food shortages and queues affect All the island.

“My people, everyone sells and go to Marianao, that’s where it is. The tax haven is in Marianao. The Versace mansion is in Marianao. The oil sheikhs live in Marianao. Queen Elizabeth, Bill Gates and the Hiltons swap for Marianao. Mami Manager and the Kardashians, were born in Marianao”, he wrote mockingly the independent journalist Héctor Luis Valdés.

Meanwhile, Cuban humorist Ulises Toirac said, also in a mocking tone: “Mayor of Marianao declares independence of the territory of the municipality from the rest of the country. ‘Dreammocratic Republic of Marianao’ is called the new State”.
