MIAMI, United States. — Cuban-American senator Marco Rubio celebrated the absence of the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorat the Summit of the Americas, which will be held in the city of Los Angeles until next Friday.
blonde celebrated in Twitter AMLO’s non-participation in the event and questioned his links with the dictatorships of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
“I am glad to see that the Mexican president, who has handed over sections of his country to drug cartels and is an apologist for tyranny in Cuba, a murderous dictator in Nicaragua and a drug trafficker in Venezuela, will not be in the US this week,” wrote the legislator.
López Obrador declined to participate in the Summit after the absence of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela became official, regimes that were not invited to the event because they were considered human rights violators.
“There can be no Summit of the Americas if all the countries of the American continent do not participate (…). Or there may be, but we consider that it is continuing with the old policy of interventionism, of disrespect for nations and their peoples,” AMLO said on Monday.
According to AMLO, the absence of the island’s regime was a wish of Republican and Democratic legislators, including New Jersey Senator Robert Menéndez, and of the Cuban community in the United States.
In the absence of the Mexican ruler, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard is expected to lead the entourage from that country.
“It is very difficult for Washington to make the more than 30 Latin American countries go at the same pace, it is simply impossible (…). In a certain way, the absence of Mexico only comes to underline the idea that Latin America is well adrift and that Washington does not have a strategy towards it”, he declared to New York Times Tony Payan, Mexico expert at the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University.
