The head of operations of the Softbank group, the Bolivian Marcelo Claure, reached an agreement with the company to leave this position, the Japanese technology giant announced in a statement on Thursday.
Claure has led key Softbank projects in recent years such as “the merger of Sprint and T-Mobile, the repositioning of WeWork or the launch of the largest venture capital fund in Latin America,” according to the company in its note, where He did not detail the reasons for the departure of the executive born in La Paz in 1970.
Until now the COO (director of operations) of the conglomerate, executive vice president and director of its international branch “has made many contributions to the company, which thanks him to the maximum for his dedication and wishes him success in his new stage,” said the founder and CEO of Softbank, Masayoshi Son.
Claure, for her part, wanted to thank her “mentor and friend” Son, and stated that during his nine years in the Japanese group he “has invested in some of the most innovative and disruptive companies that will be industry leaders in years to come,” according to the Softbank note.

The Japanese conglomerate also announced that Claure’s replacement as head of operations and director of international business will be Michel Combes, who is already part of the Softbank board of directors and had previously been CEO of the US telecommunications company Sprint.
Claure’s departure would have been motivated by his differences with Son over his compensation, which was already among the highest within the company, according to the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, citing sources close to the company.
Japanese analysts believe that his departure could affect Softbank’s plans in Latin America, since Claure was the main promoter of the investment vehicle focused on this region launched by the Japanese group in 2019, the largest of its kind to date with 5,000 millions of dollars.
