Maduro admits that Venezuela is not capable of self-sufficiency and it is urgent to boost production

President Nicolás Maduro called on the productive sectors “without distinction” to join the permanent articulation to promote productive development. He explained that the economic growth plan of his administration seeks to consummate the installation of the 18 engines of an economy that generates goods, services, wealth for the country and facilitates the construction of a new “post-rentist” economic model.


President Nicolás Maduro asserted that Venezuela is beginning to consolidate the goal of becoming a country capable of self-sufficiency. The president asked officials from his Executive train to redouble efforts to multiply production in order to also consolidate the nation as an exporting territory.

“We have where to export and we have those who want to buy from us,” Maduro stressed on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 26, broadcast by VTV.

He called on the productive sectors “without any distinction” to join the permanent articulation to promote productive development in agriculture, fishing, food and goods and services. He added that this year Venezuela has “good numbers” despite the sanctions and “the financial and oil persecution and the more than 700 measures.”

Agricultural and fishing production

During the broadcast, the Minister for Agricultural Production and Land, Wilmar Castro Soteldo, gave a balance of the Global Productive Plan in the agri-food sector. He indicated that the advance of national production is 11 million 145 thousand tons of food, of which seven million 800 thousand correspond to the vegetable sector and three million 342 thousand to the animal sector.

The head of the ministerial portfolio explained that the rainy planting cycle, “in which cereals (such as rice, corn and sorghum) become relevant.” He pointed out that 514,299 hectares were planted, with a yield of 4 to 4.5 tons per hectare, and with a projection of two million 314 thousand tons of corn, which had not been achieved since 2012 and represents a growth of 17%.

«67 thousand hectares of rice were planted in 2022 in Guárico and Portuguesa; there was a growth of 24 to 27%, compared to the year 2021 », he explained. On the other hand, he mentioned that coffee reached 223 thousand hectares in Venezuela. The figures increased from 15 quintals in the last five years to more than 25 quintals.

For his part, the Minister of Aquaculture Juan Carlos Loyo specified that the shrimp sector is the second largest export item in the nation. He stressed that “at the cut of the day we work with about 25,870 tons of shrimp.” Regarding the fishing catch, he pointed out that the entity registers some 118,000 tons.

«There is a process of continuous recovery of fish consumption. It is recorded that there are 2 kilos per Venezuelan », he added.
