LXXX Ordinary Session of Parlasur meets in Montevideo

The Mercosur Parliament meets this Monday 4 at 11 am to hold its LXXX (80) Ordinary Session, chaired by Paraguayan Parliamentarian Tomás Enrique Bittar Navarro. Senator Gustavo Penadés participates as Vice President and on behalf of Uruguay. The meeting is face-to-face and in Montevideo.

The plenary session will have on its agenda, among other topics, the Proposal by which it is recommended to the Common Market Council (CMC), the construction of a compensation dam on the Paraná River in the border area of ​​Itacorá, Ñeembucú ( Paraguay), and Itatí, Corrientes (Argentina), taking into account the importance of hydroelectric energy as a basic input for the socio-economic development of the countries in the process of integrating MERCOSUR.

Also highlighted for this Plenary Session are the Draft Standards, which on the one hand regulate the process by which the MERCOSUR Parliament makes requests for Advisory Opinions to the MERCOSUR Permanent Review Tribunal (TPR); and a second Project on the process of electing the members of said court.

A Provision Proposal for the creation of the Truth and Justice Commission in PARLASUR in relation to the War of the Triple Alliance, and, finally, a Declaration Proposal on the so-called “lawfare” in the region, is also being debated today. This Plenary Session is the first completely face-to-face since the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic.
