Lung Cancer: Threat to Public Health

Lung Cancer: Threat to Public Health

Unless patterns of air pollution and smoking are reversed, lung cancer cases and deaths from it will continue to rise in some countriesbased on estimates of new lung cancer cases, deaths, and their age-standardized rates.

The increase in lung cancer, the world’s leading cancer in terms of deaths, it’s generally attributed to increased cigarette use, Sharma and her colleagues said.

They noted that while cigarette use is expected to has reached its peak in industrialized countries In the second half of the 20th century, the tobacco epidemic is developing in regions of Asia and Africa, with concomitant increases in lung cancer morbidity and mortality in several countries.

Smoking is the most important risk factor for lung cancer.followed by air pollution (especially particulate matter, passive smoking, and occupational exposure to radon and asbestos).

The authors investigated bivariate associations between smoking prevalence and age-standardized lung cancer rates, and projected new cases of lung cancer and deaths up to the year 2050.

They also examined the relationship between mortality and incidence, considered as an indirect indicator of five-year survival, and the human development index, a parameter that includes life expectancy at birth, years of schooling, and standard of living. The results are expected to help formulate policies to combat morbidity and mortality from lung cancer worldwideregional and national.

The prevalence of smoking was 21.9% worldwide in 2016, but it was higher than 25% in 57 of 149 countries. It was high in European countries with five of the top ten countries out of 149 on this continent. The prevalence was more than 10% in all European countries. Notably, 11 of 33 countries in Africa had a smoking prevalence of less than 10%.

The analysis showed 2.21 million new cases of lung cancer and 1.8 million deaths attributed to this cancer worldwide, in 2020, of which, men accounted for about two-thirds of morbidity. The analysis projection for 2050 was 3.8 million new cases of lung cancer and 3.2 million deaths worldwide from it.

In 2050, lung cancer cases and deaths are projected to exceed 100,000 in 10 of 21 regions, led by East Asia, where 1.7 million new cases are expected and 1.5 million deaths.

Lung cancer morbidity in the Asian and African regions is expected to at least double from 2020 to 2050, overtaking the European regions, which are expected to have the smallest increases.

Additionally, while new cases will continue to be much more frequent in North America than in Southeast Asia and South-Central Asia, the number of deaths is expected to be similar.

Age-specific incidence and mortality rates increase with age, with older age groups having the highest specific rates. With the human development index, the relationship between mortality and incidence showed a negative correlation.

The authors stated that worsening levels of smoking and pollution in developing countries may make future lung cancer morbidity much higher than these projections. TO Unless the trend is reversed, cases and deaths will continue to rise.

To counteract the morbidity of lung cancer, it is also necessary to reduce other risk factors, such as air pollution and exposure to carcinogens,” the authors noted.

Smoking is the most important risk factor for lung cancer.
