Lula da Silva: Brazil will treat Venezuela with respect

“Brazil will treat Venezuela with respect. I hope that the European Union treats Venezuela with respect and that the United States reestablishes relations with Venezuela,” said presidential candidate Lula da Silva on Tuesday.

Lula praised what he called the rapprochement between Washington and Caracas under the government of Joe Biden. «I hope it’s not just for the oil“, he added in response to his diplomatic relations with that country in case of being elected as president once again.

He stressed that he has always maintained a friendly relationship with the president, Nicolás Maduro.

“I hope that the European Union treats Venezuela with respect and that the United States reestablishes relations with Venezuela,” he added while reiterating, “there is no president who is irreplaceable. Brazil will treat Venezuela with respect,” Lula said.

Regarding his relationship with the autocratic rulers of the region, he said, “I have always
known how to respect the self-determination of peoples, I cannot interfere”.

On the other hand, he also spoke about his rival, the current president Jair Bolsonaro, and assured that he is carrying out a dirty campaign against him and his family.

The former president, 76, also accused Bolsonaro of being “the only candidate who has used fake news and challenged Brazilian institutions” by insinuating that he might not accept the results of the elections.
