López Obrador will receive Díaz-Canel in Campeche to supervise the work of the Mayan Train

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will receive Miguel Díaz-Canel this Saturday, February 11, in lCampeche, capital of the state of the same name, in the southeast of the country.

According to the local press, the objective is to jointly supervise the works of the Mayan Train, which passes through this city on the Yucatan peninsula and for which stone is used extracted from a quarry in Cienfuegos.

The infrastructure, converted into a small lifeline for the Cuban economy, is a 1,460-kilometer railway that will connect the main tourist cities in the area and for this purpose, more than 1,400,000 cubic meters of rajón will be sent from Cuba.

However, the work is not without controversy. Precisely this Tuesday, a judge granted a suspension of the construction requested by the environmental group Sélvame del Tren, which had processed an amparo trying to paralyze the construction of one of the sections.

The resolution, although it warns of the destruction of the flora in some 354 hectares of forest, indicates that it will be possible to continue when the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) grants the change of land use.

“The removal or destruction of the flora of the land in appointment is not allowed, in the areas that are outside the surface in which the change of land use in forest lands was authorized,” says the judicial resolution.

Fernando Vázquez Rosas, spokesman for the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), described the news of a definitive suspension as “false”, as the NGO affirms, according to which the process “is not carried out with due process, studies, permits and authorizations”.

“The work continues because the specific consideration of the judge is not to affect the flora in places where there is no change in land use,” Vázquez Rosas alleges.

The Sélvame del Tren collective has insistently alerted about the risks of the Mayan Train and has warned that section 5 south, whose route was changed last January to a jungle area that runs over a system of caves, threatens not only biodiversity, but also the archaeological remains that members of the group have found, those on the surface and underwater.

In addition to the controversial train, Díaz-Canel’s visit has another purpose: to receive López Obrador’s thanks for sending toilets from the Island to the country, whose number currently amounts to 620.

The Office of the Presidency of Mexico reported this Tuesday that the reception for the Cuban president will take place at 8:00 a.m. and at noon there will be a meeting with personnel from the IMSS-Wellness program, which provides first and second level care services in medical units. .

This will be the fourth time that Díaz-Canel has visited Mexico. The first trip occurred on December 1, 2018, to attend the inauguration of President López Obrador, while the second visit occurred in October 2019 and the third in September 2021, as a guest at the military parade ceremony. on September 16 for Mexico’s Independence Day.

Díaz-Canel also reiterated “the deep gratitude to the people and Government of Mexico for the generous and supportive help provided to Cuba”

For his part, López Obrador visited Cuba for the first time in May 2022. At the end of December 2022, Díaz-Canel highlighted with his Mexican counterpart the “excellent state” of bilateral relations in a telephone call between the two on December 28. December, as reported by the Cuban president on Twitter.

Díaz-Canel also reiterated “the deep gratitude to the people and Government of Mexico for the generous and supportive help provided to Cuba.”

The relations between both countries are historical, however, there has been a greater rapprochement since López Obrador came to power in 2018. Cooperation extends to the health and cultural fields, among others.

The Mexican president received the José Martí Order in May, the highest decoration awarded by the Cuban State.

López Obrador has faced criticism from the opposition in Mexico for his stance against the Maduro government in Venezuela and that of Miguel Díaz-Canel in Cuba.
