Literary program of the new edition of the Casa de las Américas Prize begins

With the opening words by the Venezuelan poet Gustavo Pereira, the program of the Literary Prize began this Monday in Havana House of the Americas in its 2023 edition, which for the occasion will have 480 works in competition.

The jury was established at the institution’s headquarters, which will meet for the next five days with the participation of authors from Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and the host country, according to a report from the Prensa Latina (PL) agency.

The 63rd edition of the contest called for the presentation of unpublished works in the categories of short stories, testimonial literature and studies on the black presence in contemporary America and the Caribbean.

Also included are proposals for Brazilian literature with fiction books written in Portuguese and published in that language during the years 2020-2022, adds the outlet.

As part of programthis Tuesday a conversation will be held in the Manuel Galich room of the institution with the writers Telma Luzzani (Argentina), Cristian Valencia (Colombia) and Ricardo Riverón (Cuba).

The volume will also be presented In press (1955-1976)by Haroldo Conti, together with the collection of poems The exceptional beauty of summerby Luis Lorente (Cuba), winner of the Casa de las Américas Literary Award in 2022.

Among the main activities of the day will be the delivery of the Prize of poetry José Lezama Lima to the work diary of revelationswritten by Pereira, who will read his texts, the publication specifies.

According to essayist Jorge Fornet, director of the Casa’s Research Center and the magazine House of the Americas353 texts in the Short Story category and 96 in Testimony opt for the oldest literary award in Latin America.

The activities will continue until this Friday with presentations, talks and exchanges with writers. The premiere of the piece is planned there where the lightby the Cuban musician José María Vitier, in a concert tribute to the centenaries of the founder of Casa de las Américas, Haydée Santamaría, and the intellectual Fine Garcia Marruz.

On the 28th, when the 64th anniversary of the foundation of Casa de las Américas is commemorated, the awards ceremony will take place in the four genres invited: Short Story, Testimonial Literature, Studies on the Black Presence in Contemporary America and the Caribbean, and Brazilian literature, and fiction.

Also in greeting to the important date last Friday the Casa de las América Composition Awardin its ninth edition, which went to the Mexican musician Alejandro Casales Navarrete, for his work The fractal dimension of space broccoli.

The Casa de las Américas Award is the prestigious recognition with which each year the Cuban institution honors the most prolific authors of the Latin American and Caribbean area, with the inclusion of other nations of the world.
