The Brazilian justice granted the freedom to Celia Castedo Monasterio, former official of the Administration of Airports and Auxiliary Services of Air Navigation (Aasana), who was detained in the Corumbá Women’s Penal Establishment, accused of authorizing the LaMia flight in which the Chapecoense club was transported and which crashed on 28 November 2016 in Colombia, leaving a balance of 71 people dead.
It was the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil that revoked this Tuesday, March 29, the measure of preventive detention for the purpose of extracting Castedo, after his defense attorney, Armando da Silva Souza, submitted a request for release.
The Brazilian jurist explained to Diário Corumbaense that the justice decided to release the former Asaana worker because the Bolivian State did not process his extradition, despite the fact that a process is being followed in the country for the crimes of attack against the security of means of transport and breach of duty, for which she was added to the red list of diffusion of the National Directorate of Interpol in La Paz, Bolivia.
“Bolivia has not responded to extradition requests from Brazil. Minister André Mendonça ordered the filing of the extradition process due to the unexpected loss of the object. The (Bolivian) State remained inert, did nothing, was summoned several times. He is now free and there will be no restrictions to comply with, such as the use of an electronic anklet. Celia should not stay in Corumbá, she will have to appear in Bolivia, but it is up to her defense in that country to monitor the situation, ”Souza explained to the Brazilian newspaper.
Likewise, the lawyer pointed out that among the grounds for his request for release he explained that Castedo “is not an inspector, she is not an authority and she is not an expert in flight safety by AASANA, just a simple support employee, without knowledge of the characteristics of the aircraft, and without the competence to change or modify the flight plans”.
She was detained for six months
The Bolivian was arrested on September 23, 2021 in the Brazilian city of Corumbá, border with the Bolivian municipality of Puerto Quijarro, where she remained imprisoned in the Women’s Penal Establishment awaiting her extradition request, which never arrived.
According to the Federal Police, Castedo was a flight safety specialist and, at the time, “Fraudulently breached the minimum procedural requirements for the approval of the flight plan of the Lamia aircraft”, since, in the program presented, the flight autonomy was not adequate for the trip.
