Lacalle Pou: “The times of the people can and must be met by the times of the rulers”

The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, led the inauguration of 23 homes for 80 people, in the town of Independencia, Florida. The complex, developed by Mevir and built in 13 months, is the first built there after 27 years. Likewise, this agency works on the renovation of the community hall and the school in the area. “When there is political will, things happen,” said the president.

Participating in the instance together with the president, this Tuesday 2, the Minister of Housing and Territorial Planning, Irene Moreira; the undersecretary of that portfolio, Tabaré Hackenbruch, and the president of Mevir, Juan Pablo Delgado.

Also present were the Undersecretary of Social Development, Andrea Brugman; the mayor of Florida, Guillermo López; the vice president of the National Housing Agency (ANV), Gustavo Borsari; and other national authorities.

During his speech, Lacalle Pou considered that Mevir is an “extract” of the best of our people. He highlighted the collaborative work of the neighbors for the construction of the houses and stressed that “when there is political will, things happen.” He also considered that this fact leaves a lesson to those who work in decision-making positions: “The times of the people must be fulfilled by the times of the rulers.”

Finally, he valued the beginning of a stage for the inhabitants in their respective homes, places “where one raises what he most loves,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister Moreira added that, thanks to the struggle and dialogue led by the neighbors, the new nucleus of Mevir in Independencia is today a reality.

For his part, the president of Mevir valued the collective struggle. He also highlighted the social policy of roots promoted by the institution and the social control exercised over it by citizens.

As a differential, he pointed out the importance of building houses where people reside and find their family ties. He also stated that the sense of belonging must be respected and understood.

The group of households is made up of 23 houses, 21 of which are in a nucleated plan and two on private land. The housing complex will be called Fabricio “Lechu” Volpi Pérez, in homage to a renowned resident of the community and participant in the Mevir programs who died of COVID-19 in 2021.

The houses were built in a period of 13 months, with cellular concrete cured in an autoclave, a technology that reduces up to 30% of construction time.

Once the speeches were over, the keys and an energy efficiency kit were handed over to the new owners. At the closing, the authorities visited one of the new houses and discovered an allusive plaque.

In addition to this construction, Mevir is working to renovate the community hall and school No. 73 in Independencia, which is attended by most of the children of the participants. This educational establishment was built by the founder of the program, Alberto Gallinal Heber, through a project by the engineer Eladio Dieste. Presidency
