The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, issued a short statement through his social networks in which he expressed his rejection of actions “contrary to international law.”

The Uruguayan president understands that “Russian military forces launched an offensive against Ukraine,” but stressed that Uruguay is a country “that is always committed to peace.”

“We reject actions contrary to international law and UN principles. It is urgent that the negotiations return to resolve the conflict in a civilized way, ”he added.

Uruguay insists on dialogue

This Wednesday, the Presidency of the Republic had issued a statement on the “increased tensions between Ukraine and Russia.” “The Uruguayan Foreign Ministry follows with great concern the increase in tensions on the border between Ukraine and Russia, which have escalated rapidly after the recognition of two separatist regions in Ukraine by Russia and the displacement of military troops, in violation of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations. These events put regional stability at risk,” said the statement posted on the Executive’s official website.

“The members of the United Nations have the responsibility to ensure the maintenance of international peace and security and respect for the principles and objectives established in its Charter,” added the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the government.

“In Uruguay’s opinion, dialogue and negotiation are the only ways to reach a solution to this situation. The confrontation is a war that everyone will have lost beforehand. She will leave a bitter and painful mark, as well as an unprecedented setback for our civilization, ”he added.
