Ken Buchanan, one of Roberto Durán’s historic rivals, dies

The remembered Scottish boxer Ken Buchanan, from whom Roberto Durán snatched the Lightweight World Title in a legendary fight in 1972, died today, Saturday, April 1, at the age of 77, the foundation that bears his name reported.

«It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Ken Buchanan passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning… More announcements to come and please give the family some time to process this sad news… RIP Ken always a gentleman and one of the greatest champions that we will never see,” the Ken Buchanan Foundation said in a statement.

He finished his career with a record of 61 wins and 8 losses, becoming World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association Lightweight Champion.

In Panama he is well remembered for his confrontations, first with Ismael Laguna when on September 19, 1971 he defeated the Panamanian by unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden with the WBA Lightweight Title at stake.

Then in 1972 would come his fight with Roberto Durán, a fierce combat where the Panamanian would be crowned for the first time in his legendary career, the fight ended by technical knockout in round 13 with the victory for the Panamanian.

His last fight was in 1982 when he retired from the ring, being undoubtedly one of the greatest European lightweight boxers ever seen.
