Holy Week on the way: know the writing keys

Given the approach of Holy Week, doubts arise about which terms to write in upper and lower case, including special dates and religious words. The Royal Spanish Academy clears us of doubts.

The Urgent Spanish Foundation of the Royal Spanish Academy, published a special material on the writing keys for Holy Week, aimed at all fans of correct writing. The main points are transcribed below:

1. Liturgical or religious periods

As indicated by the Orthographythe nouns and adjectives that are part of the name of liturgical or religious periods are written with capital initial: Lent, Holy Week, Easter.

2. Frequent names

Also are written with a capital letter the denominations Friday of Dolores, the Nazarene, Palm Sunday, Resurrection Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter monday

3. The Passion of Christ

As indicated in the Orthographythe appropriate thing is lowercase the noun passion in this expressionwhether it is considered a concept or a religious episode, whether it is used alone and referring par excellence to that of Christ, as indicated in the RAE Twitter account: the passion.

4. Names of steps and brotherhoods

It is advisable to write the names of the steps, images and cofradías with initial capital letters and without italics or quotation marks: La Borriquita, The Holy Supper, The Arrest, Brotherhood of Christ of the Column, Brotherhood of Christ of the Crown…

5. Frequent religious terms

are written with lowercase initial the religious terms as vigil, Eucharist, mass, offices, prayer in the garden, confession, communion either procession.

6. Proper form of Way of the Cross
