Judicial Branch will allow the JNE to access candidate background

The 2026 general election They are just over a year away and the institutions are preparing to organize the elections. In that sense, the Judiciary and the National Election Jury (JNE) signed an agreement that will allow the electoral entity to have access to the criminal records and sentences of the candidates running in the 2026 general elections.

The president of the Judiciary, Janet Tellohighlighted the importance of the agreement during the ceremony at the Palace of Justice. In that sense, he pointed out that this measure will seek to ensure that the elections are carried out with the greatest integrity.

“It is to provide citizens with a message of tranquility and confidence that the information on the convictions, consent or execution of the candidates who apply is reliable information from the records maintained and protected by the Judiciary,” he said.

The head of the PJ assured that this agreement is progress in cooperation between both institutions, but also represents a commitment to strengthening democracy.

The agreement states that the JNE will be able to access criminal records registered in the Database of the National Registry of Convictions, through the Web Service and the Criminal Record Information Request Module (MSIAP).

In addition, it offers the guidelines for carrying out the mass comparison of candidates and will be used exclusively to carry out verifications during the stages of the electoral process.

“We are on the brink of the beginning of an electoral process marked by a very weakened credibility and legitimacy of citizens in their authorities and political leaders, which requires concrete, timely and articulated actions,” said Tello.
