Judge grants definitive suspension that stops works on Section 5 south of the Mayan Train

Amparo 884/2022 was processed by professional divers qualified in cave diving on March 30, motivated by the deforestation that began three months ago in Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Tulum and in the surroundings of the tourist place known as Río Secreto. , without studies on the type of soil, without rescue of fauna and flora and without environmental impact statements.

Adrián Fernando Novelo Pérez, First District Judge in Yucatán, resolved the matter, ordering an indefinite halt to the construction of Section 5, the southern sector of the Mayan Train Project –with a line from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, Quintana Roo–, so that the execution of works related to its construction, infrastructure, removal or destruction of the biodiversity of the land or any other activity that implies its material execution will not be allowed.

Organizations such as Defending the Right to a Healthy Environment (DMAS) have promoted injunctions for the definitive suspension of the works under the argument that it will have a severe and irreversible environmental impact.

There are at least five lawsuits against the works of the Mayan Train and that question the “planning, construction, development and/or conditioning”. Despite this, the government maintains December 2023 as the date for the inauguration.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has defended his work and assured that those who are against the train are opposition groups that are even financed by the United States government.

The president has clarified that the work will not damage cenotes or the jungle, and has also maintained that they have a guarantee for the construction.
