MIAMI, United States. — Cuban writer and journalist Jorge Fernández Era, media contributor The Young Cuba and The touchwas arrested and taken to a police unit this Thursday, reported his wife, Laideliz Herrera Laza.
“My husband, Jorge Fernández Era, was taken today, at 12:30 pm, to the Aguilera Police Unit, in Calzada de Luyanó and Porvenir,” the woman said in her Facebook account.
Fernández Era’s arrest comes weeks after he was threatened by the political police for his critical analyzes of the Cuban reality.
The professor, essayist and editor Alina Bárbara López Hernández, who also collaborates with The Young Cuba and The touchdenounced the arrest of the journalist on the same social network.
“His wife Laideliz Herrera Laza just called me to explain that when they were walking together, Jorge was arrested and they took him to the Aguilera station, they informed him that ‘it was circulated,'” says the publication.
López Hernández demanded the immediate release of Fernández Era and threatened the authorities with taking to the streets if this was not done.
“If he is not immediately released I will go out in public protest, and if other people join I will not oppose it. Enough of repressing freedom of expression in Cuba,” said the professor.
Minutes later, López Hernández warned who would go to the Parque de la Libertad in Matanzas to demonstrate against the arrest of Fernández Era.
“I will be there in protest until Jorge is released. I warn you that if you try to stop me I will resist, so bring reinforcements.
Between February and March of this year, Jorge Fernández Era was harassed by State Security. Following these threats, assured on his Facebook wall that he would continue to defend his right to express himself freely in Cuba.
Graduated in Journalism from the University of Havana, Fernández Era collaborated for many years in organizations such as the Ministry of Culture, the José Martí National Library, the New Latin American Cinema Foundation and the Center for Martian Studies.
