It does not disappear: the possible changes of Esmad with the Petro government

During his presidential campaign, Gustavo Petro assured that he would consider eliminating the Mobile Riot Squad (Esmad) that operates in the country. Recently, the new director of the National Police, General Henry Sanabria, said that this force would not be eliminated, but it would undergo major changes.

In principle, other forces will be in charge of intervening in cases of disturbances and Esmad would be the last option to control demonstrations. Dialogue will prevail over social protest, he clarified.

There will be “a modification in certain action protocols, basically, to be the last way to enter a situation that merits your intervention”said the general.

Along with this, he clarified for Blu Radio: “Years ago we had a group of police officers with training in handling riots and riots, known as the available force. That available force would be formed as a special group for the protection of public demonstrations and would take the guidelines of the United Nations for the application of the law on the use of force, we need that shock force to be the last reason for being”.

In addition to this, among the changes that are being evaluated specifically for Esmad is what type of weapons should not be used for guarantee the integrity and life of people during the protests.

Weapons such as the ‘venom’, which is powerful and if used at ground level, can cause death, even because the impact received by the high speed of the projectile can cause a fatal injury“explained the officer.

Along with this, there would also be changes in other Esmad tools such as helmets and shields that would change color. Along with the transformations of the police uniforms.

Likewise, Sanabria has said that the possibility is being analyzed that some of the Esmad tankettes fit like ambulances that can transport wounded in the demonstrations.

The institution has already released images of four concepts that are being worked on for a new design of the tanks, which today are black. Among the designs that are analyzed, the possibility of being blue, or white with blue stripes, is contemplated.
