Iranian rapper Tomaj Salehi faces a possible death penalty after being accused by the Justice of “corruption on earth”, a charge that can be punished by hanging in the Persian country.
The rapper and dissident, known by his first name Tomaj, also faces charges of “propaganda against the regime, cooperation with hostile states, spreading lies, inciting violence,” the official ISNA news agency reported on Sunday. .
The charge of “corruption on earth” encompasses a series of crimes against public safety and Islamic morality.
The musician has shown his support for the protests that have shaken Iran since the death on September 16 of Amini after being arrested three days earlier by the Morality Police for wearing the Islamic veil incorrectly, mobilizations led by young people in which calls for the end of the Islamic Republic.
At the end of October, he was arrested for “having played a key role in creating riots and calling and fomenting the recent riots in the province of Isfahan and in the city of Shahinshahr,” the Isfahan city prosecutor said at the time. , Mohamad Musavian.
A few days later, state television published a video of the musician in which he allegedly confessed to his crimes.
“I was wrong, I said that, as a friend, I say that you escape”, “I was wrong”, “I was not referring to you” he says in the confession, which after its publication generated the fury of several activists on social networks.
The musician has already faced the authorities in the past and was sentenced to six months in prison and a fine in January 2022 for “provoking violence and insurrection”, although the prison sentence was suspended.
Iran has been immersed in protests since the death in September of Mahsa Amini, after being detained by the Morality Police for not wearing the Islamic headscarf properly.
The mobilizations that began with the death of the 22-year-old Kurdish girl, but which have evolved and now the protesters are calling for the end of the Islamic Republic founded by Ayatollah Ruholá Khomeini in 1979.
The judicial authorities have charged at least 2,000 of the 15,000 detainees with various crimes, six of whom have so far been sentenced to death.
