MADRID, Spain.- Of the 16 people who were injured by the massive accident happened on the evening of this Monday in Matanzas, 12 are reported to be in care, without danger to life; while the other four did not have to be hospitalized, announced the provincial director of Public Health, Luis A. According to the information, only one of the patients, diagnosed with a skull fracture, was referred to the Comandante Faustino Pérez Provincial Hospital, and another 11 received medical care at the General Docente Julio M. Aristegui Villamil, in Cárdenas. Most of the victims suffered trauma due to blows.
The incident took place in the vicinity of the Ategorrieta neighborhood of the Martí municipality, when a bus transporting workers from the Downtown Oil Drilling and Extraction Company (EPEP) overturned due to damage to its two rear tires.
Last week, an accident that occurred at kilometer 323 of the National Highway, near the municipality of Cabaiguán, caused the death of at least three people. A Moskovich brand car collided with a jeep with an escatolina —a car where two other cars were moving. The jeep traveled from Havana to Oriente and the Moskovich in the opposite direction.
According to recent data of the Cuban Government, between the months of January and October 2022, a total of 8,187 traffic accidents were registered on the island, which caused the death of 566 people and another 6,175 were injured.
At the end of October, the accident rate indicators in the country showed an increasing trend in relation to the years 2019, 2020 and 2021.
Among the main causes of these accidents are the poor state of the roads, the aging of the vehicle fleet, the lack of attention from drivers, the breach of the right of way and excessive speed.
