MIAMI, United States. – Independent feminist platforms confirmed this Thursday a double femicide that occurred in the rural neighborhood of El Pesquero, in the municipality of Cacocum, Holguín, on April 5.
“We regret the double femicide of Caridad Medina and her mother, Adaris, on April 5, in the rural neighborhood El Pesquero (of the Cristino Naranjo Popular Council), in Cacocum, Holguín, at the hands of Caridad’s ex-partner, who later committed suicide ”, specified on Facebook the YoSíTeCreo platform in Cuba.
The group of activists also sent their condolences to the families and the community affected by the femicide violence and specified that the information had been verified by the joint effort of the observatories of the Women’s Network of Cuba, the magazine taut wings and YoSíTeCreo itself in Cuba.
With these two murders, the number of victims of femicide on the island rises to 22, only so far in 2023. However, the figure must be considered an underreporting, since the Cuban State does not regularly publish statistics on cases of violence extreme macho on the island.
In the first five days of April alone, three women have been killed in femicide attacks. Last Sunday, the young Rosa Amelia Sotolongo, 22, was murdered by her partner and the father of her youngest son in the house where they both lived, in the town of Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos.
Sotolongo was survived by a six-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son.
So far this year, 16 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners on the Island.
So far, in 13 of the 15 provinces of the country, at least one femicide has been reported during 2023. With the murder of Caridad Medina and her mother add up to four victims of gender violence in Holguín.
These data should be understood as underreporting: we do not know how many women have died from gender-related issues in Cuba. The Government does not make the statistics transparent nor does it usually tell the stories of the victims.
