Independent journalist Alberto Corzo, director of ICLEP, is attacked

MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban Institute for Freedom of Expression and the Press (ICLEP) denounced the attack against its executive director, journalist Alberto Corzo, who “was brutally attacked by two unknown persons sent by the political police,” according to a note of the Institute released this weekend.

“The director of the ICLEP, shortly after having exchanged words with the political police officers known as Fernando and Alexander Herrera, was suddenly attacked by two individuals specializing in martial arts who left him lying on the road without stealing anything from him. of their belongings,” the text indicates.

The ICLEP note also clarifies that the journalist was picked up by a driver who took him to the “Mario Muñoz Monroy” Hospital in the municipality of Colón, in Matanzas. In that health institution, the respective injury certificates were denied, supposedly, because “in detail the damage to his body” was not known.

“The orthopedic specialist who treated him immobilized his arm due to a possible clavicle fracture and injury to the elbow of his left arm, giving him painkillers,” said Martha Liset Sánchez, the journalist’s wife.

The woman also explained that her husband, upon leaving the hospital, went to the Police unit where the officers present refused to file the journalist’s complaint against the State Security agents who had attacked him.

“Right now Corzo was transferred to the provincial capital by his brother, to see if they can examine him by another specialist and perform the required medical tests,” Sánchez confirmed to ICLEP.

The married couple of journalists, Alberto Corzo and Martha Liset Sánchez, are systematically victims of different types of aggression by the Cuban regime.

In 2021 Corzo was attacked about 33 times while his wife was the victim of state violence on about 25 occasions, says the ICLEP. The couple’s 10-year-old children have also been targets of the regime’s harassment of independent journalists.

In December 2021, the ICLEP will also denounced that the citizen journalist Mabel Páez, director of The Majadero of Artemishad been “beaten by two hooded men who entered her house.”

On that occasion, the assailants caused a wound above the reporter’s left eyebrow. In addition, they broke her lower lip, swollen her chin, injured two fingers on her right hand and “they left her with a purple entire side of her body that causes her a lot of pain when she breathes.”
