The fifth edition of the International Colloquium on Studies on Native American Cultures began its work sessions on Tuesday in Havana, focused on the theme “Indigenous peoples: memory, communication and languages.”
The event, which is based at the Casa de las Américas, aims to contribute to the actions for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly.
The participants will address issues/problems related to the current economic, political, social and cultural reality of the indigenous peoples of Latin America, their actions against the mechanisms of dispossession, the forgetting of their worldviews, and the way in which these are articulated with strategies of communication, artistic creation, experiences of resistance, activism and leadership.
The Colloquium concludes on Friday. It includes master conferences, panels, book presentations and poetry readings, among other activities.
Created in January 2011, the Study Program on Native American Cultures seeks to promote an approach to the history, memory, knowledge, spirituality and challenges of indigenous peoples and to make their realities and cultural production known.
