Despite the persistence of the senators of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), the Senate decided to postpone until January the debate on the law of promotions in the Armed Forces because it failed to add two thirds of the votes for this process.

The banks of the opposition alliances Comunidad Ciudadana and Creemos demanded more information on the list of uniformed men proposed to be promoted to the higher grade in the military entity.

“All day we are trying to get into the substantive issue, there we can debate,” lamented MAS Senator Rubén Gutiérrez after confirming the rescheduling of the debate.

In the end, the ruling party could not install the “Reserved Session” for the treatment of this issue because it did not get two-thirds after two attempts.

In one of the votes, the endorsement to enter the substantive issue added 22 votes, while the No reached 13.

The senator from Creemos Centa Rek explained that the opposition’s demand is that the list of promotions coincide with the one sent to the Senate in 2019, which even has a constitutional ruling that declares it appropriate.

He argued that the purpose is to know if that payroll suffered adjustments that deviate from that constitutional mandate.

In this context, the opposition ruled that the delay in the debate would cause annoyance in the military ranks, as denounced by the MAS legislators.

“There may be more discomfort in Bolivians if these promotions are made without us having fulfilled our duty to be a reviewing body, than to give guarantees in strict compliance with the norm,” he said.
