In Táchira, paying for gasoline with Colombian pesos is more expensive

This increase in gasoline has not been authorized by the Fuel Cabinet, the entity in charge of regulating the distribution and sale of fuels in the entity

The price of gasoline at “premium” stations in Venezuela is still $0.5 per liter. However, in Táchira, one of the regions that has suffered two decades of fuel supply failures, they are currently paying more dearly. The reason? The rise of the dollar in Colombia has caused an increase in the peso, the currency with the highest circulation in the Andean entity.

This Thursday, July 14, at international sales (“premium”) service stations, the liter of fuel was set at 2,200 pesos, after having remained, for a long time, at 1,750.

This increase has not been authorized by the Fuel Cabinet, the entity in charge of regulating the distribution and sale of fuels in the entity.

In days past, according to reports from The nationNatalia Chacón, director of the regional entity “urging users to pay for gasoline in local currency” and service stations to “receive payment in bolivars.”

Finally, Chacón affirmed that they will be “in constant monitoring” to ensure that international service stations accept payment in bolivars, while awaiting orders regarding the problem of the Colombian peso.

“PDVSA must speak out”

The deputy to the National Assembly 2021-2025, Hugo Saavedra (Copei) also ruled on the matter: it demanded that the officials of the Fuel Table in the entity must solve these irregularities.

“PDVSA must make a statement, what will happen if the peso falls in Colombia against the dollar? In the stations, the prices will remain the same, generating more inflation in goods and services, and the tachirenses will continue to be the most affected,” said Saavedra, reviewed The Pin.

20 years dealing with gasoline

Táchira is one of the regions of the country most affected by failures in the distribution and sale of fuel. Since 2002, after the “Oil Strike”, refueling a tank in the entity is a calamity, which can last for a day and be very expensive. With the increase in gasoline, decreed by Nicolás Maduro in May 2020 – in progress since June 2020 – subsidized fuel is a rarity: until last April 2022 –when they released the scheduless– the “Pico y placa” and the limit per month was applied in the “premium” pumps, the subsidized gasoline was “a lottery” that the Government sang.
