In Sancti Spíritus they promise that the blackouts will be less "traumatic" in 2023

The Sancti Spíritus Electric Company published the new schedule of cuts in the province’s energy service as part of the “maintenance” of the generating plants. The director of the state company, Yoanny Acosta Solenzar, assured to the official newspaper Escambray that it is sought that the blackouts “are not as traumatic” as those registered in past months, of up to 14 hours.

The schedule, in force as of this Monday, is divided into four blocks with effects of between 15 and 20 megawatts (MW) in each circuit. During January, the executive added, the maintenance of several plants of the National Electric System (SEN) is planned, which, “together with some breakages that might present”, will bring back “the annoying blackouts”.

The forecast of the National Electric Unit (UNE) is that the interruptions in Sancti Spíritus will be concentrated in the peak demand from 5:30 in the afternoon to 8:00 at night. “It is intended that the extension of these hours does not exceed our estimates, but it may happen that, if some of the large thermoelectric plants in the country go out unexpectedly, we do have to extend the time of the blackout,” warned Acosta Solenzar.

Supply interruptions will rotate throughout the day, with changes every six hours. In other words, a cut would go from 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., the second from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the third from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and the room from 8:00 at night to 2:00 am.

The director of the electric company assured that the supply to the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital, located on Bartolomé Masó street, will be guaranteed.

For example, block 1 had scheduled cuts in the electricity supply for this Tuesday from 2:00 in the morning to 8:00 am. Meanwhile, for Wednesday the blackout will be from 8:00 pm to 2:00 am, and on Thursday it will be without service from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. For Friday, it returns to the affected hours from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

In this block are some areas of the municipalities of Trinidad, Taguasco, Sancti Spíritus, Yaguajay and Fomento.

The director of the electric company assured that the supply to the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital, located on Bartolomé Masó street, will be guaranteed. The networks that connect to the water pumping stations and “others linked to the centers of importance for the economy of the territory” will also be protected, added the official.

The Government presented as a triumph that in the first nine days of the year the only “affected” supply in the province occurred on January 4, with a 33-minute interruption. However, the spokesperson for the state company acknowledged that there is a risk of an increase in the generation deficit due to the shutdown of unit 3 of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes thermoelectric plant, in Cienfuegos, due to planned 10-day maintenance.

After almost three weeks without interruptions during December, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, warned that blackouts will return more frequently between January and April with the shutdown of several plants due to planned maintenance, so that the electrical system “is ready” for the greatest demand during the summer.

According to O Levy, the interruptions will be “nothing compared to the 10 and 12 hours” of blackouts that most of the Island experienced between September and October, aggravated by infrastructure damage after the passage of hurricane Ian.
