According to data from the Municipal Secretary of Mobility and Citizen Security, In the city of La Paz, about 220,000 vehicles circulate through its streets daily and according to the rate of growth of the vehicle fleet, it is estimated that in the next 10 years there will be 500,000 motorized vehicles.
“Then the municipality, in the responsible work it carries out, is taking the most appropriate measures to improve this situation. In this regard, it has been called this press conference to summon all the actors of mobility in the city to attend the Paceño Transport Summit”, said the municipal secretary of Mobility and Citizen Security, Enrique Villanueva.
At that amount, according to the report, the number of passengers transported between the municipalities of La Paz and El Alto is addedwhich results in the increase in vehicular and pedestrian chaos that is experienced daily between both cities.
“Approximately 400,000 passengers circulate between the two cities, this does not imply making a free stone with the transport that comes from El Alto and given the disproportion that exists between the number of vehicles that transport only 400 thousand passengers, which is 8,000 vehicles, with respect to 10,000 vehicles transporting approximately one and a half million passengers. In that sense, part of the rearrangement has to do with the rationalization of transportation that comes from El Alto”, he explained.
The municipal authority stated that between the city of La Paz and El Alto there is a growing number of passengers using public transport. “La Paz is a metropolitan city and any action must consider that there is a significant volume of passengers that circulate between the two cities,” he said.
This problem will be addressed at the Paceño Transportation Summit to be held on October 12 at the 6 de Agosto Municipal Cinema Theater, for which the Mayor’s Office of La Paz will send invitations to the urban unions of La Paz, the Free Transport Association (ATL), the Departmental Federation 1st. of Maythe Central Única de Transporte, the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA), the Bolivian Catholic University (UCB), other private universities, the Federation of Neighborhood Councils of La Paz (Fejuve), social controls, professional associations and civic committee , among other instances.
“The objective of the summit is to collect recommendations and suggestions on the proposal that the municipality already has, it is important to define strategic guidelines and specific policies for the reorganization because we know that we can’t wait any longer because of the congestion we need to take definitions this month”, said the director of Regulation and Ordering of Mobility of the Ministry of Mobility and Citizen Security, Luis Alemán.
The Municipal Secretary of Mobility and Citizen Security reports that the traffic congestion generated in the city shows that the average speed from the Church of San Francisco to the Plaza del Estudiante is eight kilometers per hour and the average speed used by a healthy adult person on the same route is five kilometers per hour. In this framework, the Mayor’s Office of La Paz seeks to agree on solutions to improve circulation based on a proposal already worked on.
