Santo Domingo. – The Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development (MEPyD) reported that in August of this year 30 construction projects were approved. investment public. The publication, prepared by the General Directorate of Public Investment, explains that 60.9% of the projects approved between January and August correspond to the central government (206 projects), followed by 19.8% by municipal governments (67 projects) and 17.1% of the companies (58 projects). Similarly, the highest cost is for central government projects amounting to RD 161,082.7 million (90.3% of the total approved in January and August).

Functional classification

The document details that 60% of the projects approved in August correspond to Housing and Community Services (18 projects), in particular Community Development (11 projects).

It points out that the analysis by cost of the projects shows that the highest amount approved corresponds to the Transportation sector, with RD 37,475 million (82.6% of the total amount approved in August). Of the amount approved for Transportation, 89.6% will be used for the construction of the monorail in the province of Santiago.

For the January-August period, the report continues, 38.8% of the approved projects correspond to Housing and Community Services (131 projects), then 29.3% to Health (99 projects) and 8.6% to Sports, Recreational, Cultural and Religious (29 projects). As for the total cost of the projects, 45.7% will be allocated to Health.

Executing institutions

The executing institutions with the largest number of projects approved in August were the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (5), the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewerage (3) and the Municipality of Postrer Río (3).

Geographical distribution

The document establishes that of the 30 projects approved in August, 5 were in the province of Santo Domingo, which represents the largest number of projects approved at the provincial level, followed by Independencia and San Juan with four projects each, while the rest are It is distributed in 15 provinces.

For the January-August period, the report adds, the provinces with the largest number of approved projects are Santo Domingo (30), Santiago (28), San Cristóbal (27) and the National District (26). Since January 2022, Santiago occupies the place with the highest investment in approved projects, whose amount amounts to RD 82,629.1 million, increased by 68.5% compared to the month of July.

Santiago Monorail

The publication highlights that 74% of the amount approved in August is a project in Santiago that seeks to increase the offer of mass public transport with the construction of a monorail, for a total cost of RD 33,586.1 million.

The document explains that the monorail is an alternative that seeks to increase the supply of public transport in the province of Santiago, with a route designed to travel through Avenida 27 de Febrero and Avenida Estrella Sadhalá.

This means of transport will provide a service to 76% of the urban territory and will cover a total of 13 kilometers through 15 stations. It highlights that the construction of the monorail, under the responsibility of the Ministry of the Presidency, will allow approximately 501,094 Dominican men and women to need less time to get around, resulting in savings for families and an increase in their quality of life.
