In Argentina, the National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology (Anmat) prohibited the use of Mentisan, as well as its distribution and marketing. Faced with this scenario, INTI, the firm that produces the ointment, came forward to defend its quality and effectiveness.

In accordance with Argentine provision 2300/2022, issued on Tuesday, March 29, in the neighboring country there are no records in the fields of medicines, medical products or cosmetic products, for which it was instructed to avoid their sale throughout the nation.

“It is not possible to determine if (the products) were made under the circumstances indicated by the law and what their true composition is, nor to know if the inputs used for their manufacture are suitable for application in humans or what their real effects are,” he says. The document.

In response, the INTI drugstore, which has been making the traditional menthol ointment for decades, indicated in a statement that the Argentine provision “is directly related to the lack of a health registry in its territory, and not to the lack of effectiveness” of the national product.

“Regarding the observation of the Anmat of Argentina, we inform that this provision is directly related to the lack of a health registry in its territory and not to the lack of effectiveness and safety of our Mentisan,” the statement said.

In the same way, he adds that the ointment “has transcended borders and has reached more than six countries, including the United States, France and Germany, transported directly by the people who travel and also through legal channels managed by INTI.”

The ointment was created in 1938 based on a formula by the German Ernesto Schilling, used to combat cough, flu and cold.

The product is also noted for decongesting the respiratory tract, calming rheumatic and neuralgic pain, relieving burns, insect bites, among other uses.

Recently, in 2020, the year the Covid-19 pandemic began, it was also used by some Bolivian families as part of home anticovid treatments, before the arrival of a vaccine against the disease.
