The crime of trafficking in persons has been increasing in recent years and Dayra Campos, director of the Inter-Agency Office Against Trafficking in Persons of the Ministry of Security indicated that before, victims of foreign nationality were thought to a greater extent, but in 2022 a 40% were Panamanian, 100% minors.
«It is very true that we are a country of origin, transit and destination of trafficking and that due to our geographical position the issue of migratory flow makes us even more susceptible to it occurring more frequently; However, the fact that there is national trafficking is not ruled out, they are national victims with internal trafficking,” he said, assuring that they are strengthening the detection capacity of the first responders such as the National Border Service, the National Migration Service, the National Aeronaval, the National Police and the Public Ministry.
He highlighted that on March 2, through Operation Omega, they rescued a Panamanian minor victim, they arrested 4 people involved in this case. The detention was declared legal by the guarantee judge.
