In 20 days of August, three groups dedicated to human trafficking have been dismantled

On July 31, Minister Remigio Ceballos Ichaso assured that at least 11 gangs dedicated to human trafficking have been dismantled in the country, as well as the arrest of 20 people for this crime. However, he did not clarify the period of time in which these arrests have taken place. In the first 20 days of August, three gangs have been dismantled in Anzoátegui, Monagas and Táchira related to this crime

The director of the Corps of Scientific, Penal and Criminalistic Investigations (Cicpc), Douglas Rico, stated that during the first 20 days of August three networks dedicated to human trafficking have been dismantled in the states of Monagas, Anzoátegui and Táchira.

The last criminal organization dismantled operated in the state of Táchira. The official stated, in his official instagram accountwho were arrested Luis Rodríguez (27 years old), Moisés Abraham Hernández Barreto (38 years old) and Angelis Magalis Álvarez López (24 years old), in the border municipality of Bolívar, from where they took the victims to Colombia.

In Monagas, a network was detected that captured women and then took them to Trinidad, while in Anzoátegui two men were arrested who retained, prostituted and sold sexual material of young people, most of them in poverty.

The director of the Cicpc said that the work of this organization has prevented “the illegal departure of some young women who are tricked into being taken” to other nations, where they would be “used as sexual instruments.”

On August 8, Rico reported on the creation of the Investigation Coordination on Trafficking in Persons throughout the Venezuelan territory, with the intention of minimizing the crime, “given the increase in complaints by relatives of the victims.”

On July 31, Minister Remigio Ceballos Ichaso assured that in the country at least 11 gangs dedicated to human trafficking, as well as the arrest of 20 people for this crime. However, he did not clarify the period of time in which these arrests have taken place.

12 of the 20 detainees were requested by the authorities, the official said. He also noted that 42 people were rescued and are undergoing treatment.

In the 2021 report of the United States Department of State on this crime, where Venezuela is ratified within its black list, 696 Venezuelans in 24 countries were counted as victims of trafficking. Although the majority are women, “traffickers increasingly exploit Venezuelan men for forced labor in other countries, including Aruba and Curaçao.”

The exploitation of Venezuelans also occurs within borders. In the Mining Arc, says the report, 45% of the workforce is made up of minors “extremely vulnerable to trafficking.”
