ILO global forum on post-Covid-19 recovery concludes

Opening the last day of the event designed to increase the coherence of the international response to the economic and social impact of Covid-19, the Director-General of the ILO, Guy Ryder, called for this endeavor to continue in a spirit of cooperation.

During Thursday’s main session, representatives from various nations shared insights on how to make a “just transition” after the pandemic that maximizes the economic and social benefits of climate action.

Regarding the importance of work at this stage, the Minister of Labor and Employment Promotion of Peru, Betssy Chavez, warned that “decent employment goes hand in hand with being able to reduce informality.”

He recalled that formalization is one of the most important challenges facing Peru and other countries in the world after the pandemic.

For his part, Abdel Fattah, president of the Arab Republic of Egypt, identified the forum as an opportunity for us to “better understand the magnitude of the global problem we face and move forward in developing viable solutions.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica insisted that history will record not only the intensity of this pandemic crisis, but also the courageous and fundamental decisions that were made during the recovery.

For three days, Heads of State and Government, international organizations, multilateral development banks and employer and worker leaders valued the increase in decent jobs, inclusive economic growth, universal social protection and the sustainability of companies, among others topics.

Above all, they proposed actions to ensure a people-centred recovery from the health crisis that is inclusive, sustainable and resilient.
