IACHR on McFields: “His dismissal confirms the serious violations in Nicaragua”

MCFIELDS, CIDH,

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) assured this Tuesday that the public statements and subsequent dismissal of the former Nicaraguan ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields, confirm the serious violations of human rights in the country.

“(These events) confirm the serious human rights violations that are being committed in the country, the institutional deterioration and the sharpening of the Executive’s strategy to silence dissident and opposition voices,” the IACHR said in a statement.

After five months as ambassador to the OAS, McFields rebelled on March 23 against the president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, denounced the “dictatorship” of his country and demanded the release of political prisoners, for which he was immediately removed from office. .

In its statement, the IACHR urged Nicaragua to put an end to the persecution of dissident voices, free all those arbitrarily detained, and seek formulas to reestablish the rights and guarantees of a democratic State of law.

In addition, he exhorted the American States and the international community to demand that the State of Nicaragua comply with its international obligations in the area of human rights.
