The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures in favor of the digital activist and political prisoner Yoel Ibzán Sandino Ibarra, after considering that he is facing a “serious and urgent situation” in the Jorge Navarro Penitentiary System, known as “La Modelo” .
In a statement released this May 9, the agency said that the opponent since his illegal detention on November 5, 2021 has not received timely medical attention to treat his health effects. In addition, “the State provided information that does not allow it to be determined that the alleged risk factors have been duly mitigated.”
Yoel Sandino suffers from a congenital cyst in his head, for which he must be constantly checked every six months and since his arrest he has not been seen by a neurologist. On repeated occasions, his relatives have requested a specialized medical assessment for the prisoner of conscience, however his request is not taken into account.

On April 20, the relatives of the political prisoner were able to visit him in “La Modelo”, and found that he had severe headaches, double vision and dizziness. “To date, the neurologist specialist has not yet seen him, they have not done the magnetic resonance study to assess the size of the congenital cyst,” they indicated to the team of Article 66.
The resolution 21/22dated May 5, states that said measure was granted at the request of the Nicaraguan Never Again Human Rights Collective, an organization that made the request on March 3, 2022, arguing that its objective is to avoid “irreparable damage.” to the rights to life and personal integrity of Sandino.
With this decision, the IACHR asked Nicaragua to adopt “the necessary measures to protect the life, integrity and health of Yoel Sandino. In turn, he urged that his arrest comply with “international standards” and that he receive “necessary and adequate medical attention.”
