IACHR extends precautionary measures to political prisoner Yubrank Suazo

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) extended the precautionary measures for the political prisoner Yubrank Suazo, because it considers that he is in a “serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to his rights in Nicaragua.”

Suazo is a political leader from the department of Masaya and a member of the Civic Alliance. He was arrested for the second time on May 18, 2022. The raid occurred at 5:15 a.m., violating the schedule established for those procedures.

«The Commission assessed that the arrest was made using violence and that information was later denied about the reason for it and the whereabouts of Suazo. In addition, relatives and lawyers have not had access to information about the situation that allows them to initiate the necessary resources, “indicates the IACHR.

In the initial hearing that took place on May 31 and lasted about 40 minutes, the opponent’s family was not allowed to enter. The judge rejected the change of precautionary measure and confirmed the preventive detention. No date was set for the start of the trial, which should be oral and public. The young man is accused by the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship of conspiring to undermine national integrity.

«The IACHR observed that no protection measure had been adopted since the precautionary measures were granted, both to Suazo Herrera and his family, 5 years ago. For its part, under the terms of article 25 of the IACHR Rules of Procedure, information was requested from the State, without receiving a response, “says the agency.

The requests of the IACHR

The IACHR asked the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo to adopt the necessary measures to guarantee the rights to life and personal integrity of Yubrank Suazo.

They also ensure that their “agents respect the rights of the beneficiary in accordance with the standards established by international human rights law, such as in relation to acts of risk attributable to third parties.”

In addition, that Yubrank Suazo be able to meet with his legal representative and allow them family visits in accordance with international standards.
