Hotel Saratoga: death toll from explosion rises to 46

The death of a person who was admitted to the Calixto García Hospital, as a result of the injuries sustained during the explosion in the Saratoga hotelin Havana, raised the death toll from the incident to 46.

The Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) of Cuba, in its most recent update On the state of those injured in the unfortunate incident, he specified that the deceased patient was in critical condition in that health institution.

In addition, he announced that of the 99 people who were affected by the event, 13 remained hospitalized and 40 have already been discharged.

The report that compiles the data until this Friday morning, indicates that among those hospitalized there are nine adults, three in critical condition and one in serious condition. They are joined by four minors admitted to the Juan Manuel Márquez pediatric hospital, where two remain reported as critical and one serious.

As a result of the location under the rubble of the hotel of the last victim reported as missing, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel decreed two days of official mourning from this Friday, when, in addition, a vigil is planned in the Parque de la Fraternidad, a few meters from the site of the disaster.

In correspondence with the mourning, the Ministry of Culture (Mincult) conveyed its condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, and announced the suspension of cultural events and public activities scheduled for today, Friday and tomorrow, Saturday throughout the Island.

According to the information disclosed by that entity, the canceled activities include those related to the segment of the international Book Fair in the western region of the country. In this regard, each territory will be able to reschedule the most important ones, starting on Sunday, May 15.

In turn, the organizers of the 25th edition of the International Music Fair Cubadisco 2022, scheduled between the 14th and the 22nd of the current month, decided to readjust the schedule of its activities, refers a published information for the newspaper Granma.

The media points out that the Organizing Committee of that event reported that the scheduled activities will be carried out in stages and will now extend until June 5 to come.

The press release adds that in the coming days, and “in line with the evolution of these sad days that Cuba is experiencing today, the changes that the general program of Cubadisco 2022 will undergo will be announced.”
