“I can not anymore. I need admission to the IPK (Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine)”, says the 41-year-old man.
According to Torres Figueredo, who lives at Calle Lamas, number 369 A, between Martí and Santa Ana, in the municipality of Guanabacoa, his hospitalization must be carried out, compulsorily, in the IPK, a hospital that has special characteristics to treat patients. HIV/AIDS patients. In another center he would not receive adequate medical attention, he specifies.
“One trip I was admitted to La Benéfica [Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Miguel Enrique] and they threw me in an isolated room. Doctors would stand at the door like I had bubonic plague, ask ‘how are you feeling?’ and they left. The next day I took my suitcase and went home, “she said.
He also explains that he has suffered from rectal sepsis for about a year, for which he had to leave his job as a nurse, after 22 years of work in different centers in the capital.
Torres Figueredo also points out that his health situation has gradually worsened and that he went to various hospitals seeking medical treatment, but was unable to get him admitted.
“We went to La Benéfica, from there to the [Hospital] Calixto García and there they told me that I had to go to the IPK, which is where HIV/AIDS cases are treated,” he said.
This is how they “balled” him until he could not advance any further due to the pain that afflicts him. The doctor who cares for HIV/AIDS patients in his health area visited him and told him: “You are already physically worn out. Stay here and I’m going to come see you.”
“But he never came again,” laments Torres Figueredo.
The interviewee confesses that he no longer has the strength to walk and that he cannot climb the stairs to access his bedroom, so his bed is now located in the living room of his home.
“Lying down like this is how I get relief, because as soon as I take a step, the pain starts. I am very disappointed in Public Health because no one comes here knowing that I am sick, that I am dying, as the doctor said, ”he concluded.
