High mountain activities suspended in Ecuador

The measure seeks to avoid the repetition of events such as the one that occurred last weekend in Chimborazo due to an avalanche.

The Ministry of Environment announced this Friday (October 29, 2021) the decision to lay off the high mountain activities in the country. This implies at elevations of more than 5,000 meters high: Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Antisana, Illiniza Sur.

According to the Ministry, the provision will be in effect for a week while waiting for weather conditions to improve. At the end of the period, an evaluation will be carried out to determine if this type of activities.

The goal of the suspension is to avoid the repetition of accidents like the one that happened the previous weekend in the Chimborazo, where due to an avalanche, at least three climbers died and others were injured. (LAG)
