The Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, referred to the accusations of cover-up against Charles Carrera for a 2012 case in La Paloma (Rocha), and responded to the Broad Front legislator that “nobody has a crown in Uruguay”.
Heber was consulted about what Carrera said and replied that “there is no better defense than a good attack.” In addition, the minister explained about the case, that the police made a re-evaluation of the investigation carried out by the police at the time.
“Internal Affairs did that reassessment of evidence, determined that there are indications of crime, and he filed a complaint with the prosecutor’s office”. Asked about why the then deputy commissioner of La Paloma, Marcos Martínez, continues to work within the local police, the minister assured that “the criminal link between him and him to take another type of measure is not proven.”
Carrera was left in the middle of the controversy this Sunday after the program Watchword (channel 4) broadcast a series of audio in which the former head of the Ministry of the Interior asks some citizens of La Paloma not to make public a case in which police officers from Rocha are involved.
Víctor Hernández was hit by a stray bullet at the door of his house in La Paloma when Marcos Martínez was celebrating his birthday at the police station, located opposite. Hernandez was paralyzed as a result of that incident.
The incident occurred on the night of November 11, 2012, when Carrera held the position of Director General of the Secretariat at the Ministry of the Interior.
