The Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, met with Luis Lacalle Pou this week and assures that they agreed to increase the presence of uniformed officers on the streets, in order to curb the growing insecurity. This meeting, he explained, was scheduled for more than a month and a half and was merely informative. “It was not from all the police in the country, but only from Montevideo, to inform the president about the police deployment we have in the department (…) the president always asks for better results,” Heber said.
“We have an important (police) deployment in Montevideo, naturally we have to improve our results and based on that we are going to increase the work and police presence in what has to do with deployment, with various tactical operations that the Police have” , indicated.
After this meeting, he promised a more intense police presence, but he did not provide numbers or a deadline for this alleged increase in troops circulating and patrolling.
Heber says that insecurity is a matter of drug trafficking
Heber attributed the increase in violence to the fight against drug trafficking that he says he is giving from the Ministry of the Interior. “The fight against drug trafficking is the main factor behind the rise in crime in general terms,” he said.
And he continued: “Every time we close a mouth of base paste, the crime of robbery and theft drops by almost 23% in the area, and, on the other hand, the fight we are having against this network of drug traffickers that our country has as a result the most violent dispute for territory and collection of accounts, for less money and drugs on the street. This leads to an even greater analysis that in a few days I will be doing in Parliament when I am questioned ”, he concluded.
