Throughout the day of Wednesday, April 19, the street that gives access to the Cathedral, in the city of Matagalpa, was completely closed to vehicular traffic. The measure was implemented by officials from the Mayor’s Office, the Police and organized groups in the Sandinista Youth, who installed a boxing ring in which a tournament of this sport was held.

Calle de la Catedral was closed from the early hours, from north to south, but the boxing function began at the end of the afternoon, which ended until after nine at night, when the bell rang for the last of nine fights. scheduled by the organizers.

In Matagalpa there is a boxing gym, the Guy Rueck, located in the area of ​​the judicial complex, completely covered, walled and equipped with all kinds of accessories for practicing the sport of fists, it even has a ring for amateur competitions and professionals and even offices.

However, the ring was disassembled to take it to the atrium of the Matagalpina cathedral on a symbolic date, for the fight against the abuses of the Sandinista dictatorship.

Fans consulted said that in Matagalpa there are plenty of places to install a boxing ring and with greater security for athletes and followers of this amateur discipline.

“It is totally irresponsible and an abuse to close an important vehicular traffic route to put up fights, as if there were no better places for that,” complained Don Luis, a private driver who declared himself angry at having to turn onto the highway to enter back to the city and get to his house near the area.

On the other hand, Mrs. Lucía, an inhabitant near the Morazán park, adjacent to the cathedral, expressed that “there are plenty of courts in Matagalpa, there is the Paseo Juan Pablo II and they had to close the road as there is a big thing there. These people have lost their reason.”

With six multipurpose courts

In Matagalpa there are at least six multipurpose courts within the urban area and other public venues where an express boxing championship could be set up, “but the dictatorship wants to keep the church and its temples under constant siege and intimidation, without even respecting the atriums.
