MIAMI, United States. — A group of 178 Haitian migrants waiting to be transferred by sea to the United States was located this Tuesday in Cayo Francés, territory belonging to the municipality of Caibarién, in the province of Villa Clara.
Local authorities told the newspaper Granma that the migrants were located in the morning hours and that, subsequently, they received medical attention and humanitarian aid.
The official media reports that the 178 Haitians, among whom were minors, were evacuated to the Willian Darias establishment, located on the outskirts of the city of Santa Clara.
Granma He assured that the migrants would be returned to Haiti in the coming days, as has happened with other groups that have been stranded in Cuban territory.
“In correspondence with the ties of brotherhood, cooperation and solidarity that characterize the bilateral relationship between Cuba and Haiti, in the coming days the safe and voluntary return of these people to their country will be guaranteed, an attitude that is in line with international commitments in matter of migration, of which Cuba is a part”, the note states.
On June 18, a sailboat with dozens of Haitian migrants who were trying to reach the United States landed on the coast of Baracoa, in Guantánamo province.
Almost a month earlier, on May 24, a boat with more than 800 Haitian migrants washed up on the shores of the same municipality of Caibarién.
In February 2022, a precarious boat with 292 Haitians, including 56 minors, also arrived on the north coast of the province of Ciego de Ávila.
Official figures from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) indicate that some 6,000 Haitians have been intercepted trying to reach that country by sea since October 2021.
