Senator Gustavo Penadés has submitted his resignation from the National Party today, while facing investigations for alleged sexual exploitation of minors, based on at least eight complaints.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Board, Pablo IturraldePenadés expressed his decision to give up as a member of said official political force, as well as all the party responsibilities to which he had been elected or appointed.

On Tuesday, the Constitution and Legislation Committee of the Senate unanimously approved the transfer of the impeachment request presented by the prosecutor Alicia Ghione to the plenary. Voting in plenary will take place on the day of tomorrow wednesday.

In addition to his resignation from the National Party, the legislator has also resigned from the National Convention, the Departmental Convention and the International Affairs Commission of the party.

«There is room for the formation of causes for this case. Tomorrow Senator (Carmen) Asiain will make the report and will represent the vision of the National Party. A common session in which each senator will have their 20 minutes to speak,” the president of the commission and senator from the Colorado Party, Adrián Peña, told the press.

The legislator continued stating that in what the legislators received there is “some level of greater detail” than what is known by the media. “There is an argument, the prosecutor understands that there are indications to establish the cause, but regarding the cause itself, there is no major news. The complaints are established and what are the crimes linked to it, ”explained the senator.
