Guayaquil raises its alert level for COVID-19

The cantonal COE took the resolution due to the increase in cases of the disease. The city registers 562 infections and five deaths per day.

The city of Guayaquil happened to alert level 3 due to the increase in cases of COVID-19, reported this Friday (January 7, 2021) the mayor, Cynthia Viteri, basing the decision on the record of 562 contagions and 5 deaths per day after the December holidays.

In her Twitter account, the mayor added that 111 patients remain in Intensive Care Units (ICU) and that there is a shortage of antigen tests, which has motivated the cantonal Emergency Operations Committee (COE) to take new restrictive measures.

Viteri advanced that the cantonal COE will communicate today the new measures to be taken to face the situation.

Before the end of 2021, the Buenos Aires city already raised the alert level from 1 to 2 due to the increase in cases.

To date there are 58,345 cases confirmed with the coronavirus in Guayaquil, where at the beginning of the week the authorities already warned of an accelerated upward trend, which is why they urged private companies to give priority to teleworking because, between December 27 and 31, they went from 3 to 5 daily deaths from COVID-19.

Guayaquil was the worst hit city in Ecuador at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 when, in the midst of a collapse in the health and funeral system, several people denounced that they had to live for several hours with the corpse of their relatives in their homes.

However, the situation began to improve with the application of vaccines and with the inoculation plan applied by the government of Guillermo Lasso, which has managed to immunize 84.14% of the population with the first dose and 76.27% with the complete scheme until the first week of the year.

On Thursday, Ecuador reported 2,677 new positives for the COVID-19 and added a total of 559,950 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the epidemiological report released by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP).

The death toll confirmed by COVID-19 remained at 23,867, which is added to the 9,832 probable deaths from the disease, bringing together a total of 33,699 deaths, the same figure as on Wednesday.

The province of Pichincha accumulated the highest number of infections, with 204,903 positives, 480 new ones compared to the last bulletin, followed by Guayas, with 82,633 after registering 1,297 contagions. EFE
