Guatemala on alert for possible massive flow of migrants

The Guatemalan authorities activated a yellow alert this Friday for the possible massive arrival of migrants at its borders in the northeast of the territory in the coming days.

The Guatemalan Police and Army will redouble security at the border crossings with Honduras, in order to prevent the crossing of any migrant caravan that forms in the neighboring country, reported the Guatemalan Institute of Migration (IGM).

Massive attempts to cross Central American migrants seeking to reach the United States intensify every January and could happen again this weekend, the same source explained.

According to the immigration authorities, the migratory flow of people from Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela and Nicaragua could be encouraged by the US government’s decision to allow the entry of 30,000 people of these nationalities every month.

In 2022, Guatemala expelled more than 15,000 people for failing to comply with immigration requirements and 77% of these were of Venezuelan origin.

Every year thousands of citizens of different nationalities cross Guatemala on their way to the United States, where they hope to find better living conditions.
