The so-called Puebla Group, made up of 29 Ibero-American leaders, released a letter expressing their support for Marco Enríquez-Ominami -one of the organization’s founders- and questioning the postponement of the oral trial for the SQM case.
The letter was signed, among other people, by the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, who is the only acting head of state that is part of the conglomerate. He is joined by the former president of Colombia, Ernesto Samper; Ecuador, Rafael Correa; Panama, Martin Torrijos and Bolivia, Evo Morales.

Specifically, the letter maintains that “since 2015, Marco Enríquez-Ominami has been accused by prosecutors directly linked to the former right-wing president Sebastián Piñera. During these 8 years, Marco has denied these accusations and has asked to attend a fair trial, with impartial judges, where he can prove the falsehood of the accusations”.
“However, dedicated prosecutors, and with great media and financial support, have been delaying the trial. Even a few weeks before it finally began, after 8 years of investigation, the prosecutors again requested the suspension, arguing that this month of February was vacation time in Chile,” they add.
They also point out that “delayed justice is justice denied. The delay in the trial seriously violates the basic rights of the progressive leader due to the reputational damage caused. another case of lawfare like those advanced in Latin America to persecute progressive leaders, stigmatize them, point them out and later declare them innocent when moral damage has been caused”.
“Finally, truth and justice will prevail. Marco will defeat this accusation, as he has done in 12 other attempts by conservatives to accuse him of different crimes,” the letter concludes.
