In Peru, the meters of the sector electric national marked 4,984 GWh at the end of December 2021, which meant an increase of 1.9% compared to the same month of the previous year and a recovery of 2.07% in 2021 compared to 2019, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mines. For this year, the projections of Osinergmin They foresee a growth where the demand at the national level will reach a range of between 3% and 5%, closer to 3%, which would mean an additional 3,500 MW.
The reasons for the above are compelling, the lack of new mining projects this year and the volatility of the dollar mean a significant slowdown in the pace of growth that the country saw five years ago, according to Luis Ernesto Silva, vice president of the Business Unit Andean in Nexans.
In this sense, despite the fact that the business community expected the development of the economy to maintain the growth trend achieved in 2021, which according to figures from the BCR and Support Consulting was in the order of 13.3%, political instability continues to play a decisive role that does not allow a sustained growth of the economy, which results in a projected growth of only 3% for this year.

However, a development potential is perceived in Peru, specifically in the non-conventional renewable energy sector. These clean energy sources are a viable opportunity to modernize the country’s energy matrix and shield national development against the unstable variables of the national and international market.
In this sense, according to the Peruvian Association of Renewable Energies, Peru is responsible for 0.4% of CO2 emissions globally, and has the commitment to reduce said emissions by 40% by 2030, according to the Agreement of Paris. Therefore, it is vitally important to promote this sector in order to meet the commitments assumed as a country in the long-awaited energy transition.
In this context, the Nexans executive points out that Peru has the precise technical conditions to promote a plan of this nature, taking into account factors such as wind speed for wind energy and the level of solar radiation for photovoltaic projects. In fact, according to Osinergmin, in 2022 four wind and solar plants with a capacity to produce 500 MWh will come into operation.
What are the main challenges towards 2022?
“In order to exploit the great potential that the country has in terms of non-conventional renewable energies, certain adjustments to the regulatory framework are required that allow the development of an energy matrix in a sustainable, environmental and economic way.
Among the actions proposed are the regulation of distributed generation, the promotion of RER auctions (the last one was in 2016), setting goals for the inclusion of non-conventional renewable energies in the energy matrix, defining an energy contracting scheme that allows awarding contracts to finance projects of this nature, among others. If this materializes, the experts project for 2030, a participation of 28% of the Energies Non-Conventional Renewables (solar and wind) in the energy matrix of installed capacity and 52% by 2050″, points out Silva.
Likewise, “the promotion of these energies generates a kind of benefits not only of social and environmental impact, but also economic. This from the promotion of private investment, and promotion of cheaper electricity, compared to systems based on fossil fuels, directly benefiting the final consumer”.
Finally, the executive highlights the challenges in the construction sector where the company is preparing to launch different solutions and innovations throughout the year. “This 2022, Nexans Indeco celebrates 70 years in the market and that leadership that we have maintained throughout all these years, only reaffirms our commitment to continue offering sustainable and safe solutions. We will continue betting on the development of a robust portfolio that contributes to the path towards sustainable and reliable electrification”, concludes the executive.
